Article: Healing Sacrament
Healing Sacrament
www.dictionary.com
defines sacrament as “a sign, token or symbol.” A sacrament is any object,
element or action used by any person in a symbolic way. Anything can be a
sacrament and a sacrament can symbolize any number of things. The Catholic
Church may be the most widely known for their religious use of sacrament,
serving bread and wine during communion to represent the body and blood of
Christ.
However, sacrament is not limited to religious use. In fact,
observance of sacrament is universal and is taking place around you, nearly
everywhere you look! For example, the United States Flag is a sacrament used
by every patriotic American to symbolize Freedom and Independence; and red
roses represent romance and love; and pink ribbons represent support for breast
cancer awareness.
At Transformations Wellness Holistic Spa, we observe and use
healing sacraments. Following are a few examples:
- Fire. Just as a forest fire destroys life and, in turn, fertilizes new
growth, fire represents renewal and rebirth. You will never receive a service
in our spa without several candles burning in the treatment room. In our
spa, burning candles represent the renewal of body, mind and spirit.
- “Anointing with oil” and “laying on of hands.” Whether observed or not,
these Biblical healing sacraments take place during every massage.
- Smudging. Smudging is the burning of herbs and resins. Historically, those
who practiced smudging believed that smoke from smudging carries prayers
up to the universe, where they can be heard by the higher powers. Smudging
is our most customizable sacrament, as the combination of different herbs
and resins create various symbolisms of your choice. Generally, smudging
represents cleansing and purification.
- Mead. It is widely accepted that a glass of wine each day prolongs life.
Therefore, home-brewed mead represents health and longevity. (non-alcoholic
alternatives are also available.)
- Chocolate. It has been scientifically proven that chocolate releases endorphins
in the brain which stimulate feelings of euphoria and wellbeing. Therefore,
chocolate represents peace, love and joy.
There is never a charge for sharing healing sacrament, and all
are welcome (but not required) to participate.
